The redesigned side bar makes more sense and allows me to do faster manipulation. In the first few minutes, I already like the ability to choose between light and dark themes. So I downloaded Logoist 3, gave it a try and I can firmly say that I love it.įirst, Logoist 3 delivers all the good things I know and love from Logoist 2 and they improve it even further.

Three weeks ago, Benjamin from Synium Software was kind enough to send me a promo code in Mac App Store to get a copy of their latest release: Logoist 3. We build our design by combining its components, saving us from having to draw from scratch. Instead of telling us to draw, it offers us a whole bunch of templates and components. Logoist 2 takes different approach to logo design.
Thanks to my near-zero talent in art, the best I can do was using royalty-free image, then modify it using Photoshop to end up with something that looks like a logo. Give an artist the cheapest blank canvas, cheapest brush and paint, he could probably still draw something great. Give an ordinary person a blank canvas of superior quality and the best available brush and paint, we’ll most probably get average-quality painting. However, using Photoshop to actually create something requires something more than just understanding its tools and features: it requires talent. Photoshop is a powerful tool capable to do almost anything we can imagine with digital image. However, creating a proper logo (or anything really) from scratch using Photoshop is still something beyond my capability. I consider myself somewhat tech-savvy person and can do decent level of image editing using Photoshop. > An impressive range of features that go much more than skin-deep.Two years ago I purchased a logo design app called Logoist 2 and was very happy with what I got. This is disappointing, but there’s a lot here if you want cool artwork fast. And despite the app’s name, the few logo templates aren’t very usable. It’s also odd that style dimensions are set in pixels, so they don’t scale correctly within the app. This won’t matter if everything is output as vectors, but some effects have to be rendered as bitmaps – a Check Vector Export option warns you which. New files are set to a tiny 500×500 pixels, and if you click the Canvas button and pick a physical size, such as Letter, the app calculates the pixel density at 72dpi – far too low for print. You can export your work as EPS, PDF, or SVG, and edit the lines in another app, but that kind of misses the point. Even if you get something looking almost right by combining shapes and styles, you can’t edit the vector points to finish off the job. In the end, though, this is about moving pretty things around, not drawing. Controls are comprehensive, yet it all feels more accessible than a pro app, such as Adobe Illustrator or Affinity Designer. It has functions like grid snapping (with radial and concentric grids), adding and subtracting objects, align/ distribute, and creating instances of an object that inherit changes. On the right, you can customise each effect. From scratch, it’s easy to click Shape or Clipart in the top toolbar, pick from the options, and choose from the styles listed on the left. Effects include glows, transparency, emboss, gradients, and ‘Generators’ – textures that follow the shape of an object. It’s a great way to see how vector drawings are constructed, although we’d have liked more help in selecting items hidden behind others.
(The whole interface makes good use of animation, but this can be turned off.) At the top left of Logoist’s single window is a panel showing all the objects and groups in the artwork in a tree structure, like folders in Finder clicking on any item in the artwork highlights it in the tree, and vice versa, with an animated glow so you can’t miss it. A better place to start though, is the app’s Showcase, which presents dozens of finished pieces that you can unpick. Templates are provided for logos, business cards and greeting cards. It comes with a Bezier curve tool, but you can ignore it and build graphics from ready-made shapes, styles, and effects if you want to.
